Summary of Daily Weather
Date Being Summarized: 3 MAY 1995

EVERYONE EXPECTED A GOOD OPERATIONS DAY ACROSS NORTHWEST TEXAS WITH THE
DEVELOPMENT OF A WEAK SURFACE LOW AND TRAILING DRY LINE. EARLY MORNING
MCS HAD LEFT AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHEAST TEXAS. IT WAS
EXPECTED THAT THE WESTERN EDGE WOULD MOVE SOMEWHAT TO THE EAST AND LOW
LEVEL MOISTURE WOULD ADVECT NORTHWARD AHEAD OF THE DRY LINE. THE EXISTENCE
OF A BAND OF WINDS GREATER THAN 70 KTS AT 300 MB ACRROSS THE RED RIVER
VALLEY FURTHER ENHANCED THE PROSPECTS OF A GOOD OPS DAY.

BY EARLY AFTERNOON NSSL4 LAUNCHED A SOUNDING NEAR SPS AND THEN PROCEEDED
SW TO NEAR SEYMOUR. OPERATIONS WERE PLANNED FOR NORTHWEST TEXAS GENERALLY
TO THE SOUTHEAST OF CHILDRESS. MEANWHILE...BACK TO THE NORTHWEST OF THE
SURFACE LOW IN THE TEXAS PANHANDLE...A COUPLE OF THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED
IN THE LOW LEVEL NORTHERLY FLOW NEAR AMARILLO. ONE STORM PRODUCED LARGE
HAIL NEAR AMARILLO. MEANWHILE THE WARM AND MOIST AXIS WAS NARROWING OVER
NORTHWEST TEXAS AS THE WESTERLY SFC FLOW ADVANCED EASTWARD TOWARD THE
STATIONARY COOL AIR MASS/LOW CLOUD AREA TO THE EAST. THE AREA AROUND SW
OKLAHOMA BEGAN CLEARING OUT AND TEMPERATURES ROSE INTO THE 70S OVER A
FEW COUNTIES BY LATE AFTERNOON.

THE AMARILLO STORM MOVED INTO THE EASTERN PANHANDLE AND WEAKENED. LATER
INSPECTION OF ENHANCED WATER VAPOR IMAGERY REVEALED SOME SORT OF SEMI-
CIRCULAR "FEATURE" EMANATING FROM THE TEXAS PANHANDLE BY LATE AFTERNOON.
AS THE LEADING EDGE ON THE EAST SIDE MOVED ACROSS SW OKLAHOMA IT APPEARED
TO BECOME COINCIDENT WITH A LINE OF CUMULUS WHICH WAS MOVING TO THE WEST
THROUGH SW OKLAHOMA OWING TO THE PRESENCE OF A SMALL AREA OF LOW PRESSURE
AS SEEN ON THE OKLAHOMA MESONET. SFC BASED CAPE BY 1800 CDT IN SW OKLAHOMA
HAD REACHED 3000 J/KG. VERY RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF DEEP CONVECTION RESULTED
IN THIS REGION. THE STORM ENDED UP RACING EAST AND SOUTHEAST ACROSS
EXTREME SOUTHWEST OKLAHOMA INTO THE EVENING HOURS...PRODUCING BASEBALL TO
SOFTBALL SIZE HAIL.

THIS WAS AN INTERESTING DAY FROM THE STANDPOINT OF STORM INITIATION...
ESPECIALLY AS TO ANY POSSIBLE CONNECTION WITH THE "FEATURE" SEEN ACROSS
THE TEXAS PANHANDLE WHICH SEEMED TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT
OF THE ALTUS STORM. ALSO SUPPORTING A POSSIBLE CONNECTION IS THE FACT
THAT THE STORM MOVED AT NEAR 50 KTS...PERHAPS ON THE "LEADING EDGE" OF
WHATEVER IT WAS THAT EMENATED FROM THE TEXAS PANHANDLE.

NO THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED IN THE INITIAL TARGET AREA OF NORTHWEST TEXAS.
