Summary of Daily Weather
Date Being Summarized: 19 MAY 1995

A broad trough aloft dominated the northeastern two-thirds of the U.S. In the
east, a significant front was moving through the middle Atlantic states and be-
ginning to push into the Gulf of Mexico. A strong short wave trough was moving
southeastward in the northwesterly flow behind the eastern system, entering the
vicinity of the Great Lakes. This system was bringing a reinforcing surge of
cool air behind it, with a cold front entering KS. With a cool, stable airmass
behind the eastern system dominating the southern plains, not much was happening
convectively. Some thunderstorms developed in the high plains of CO and a tor-
nado was reported in the vicinity of the new Denver airport (perhaps the first
of what promises to be many!) but this was the only report anywhere near the
VORTEX ops area in the SELS rough log. Although a southerly flow was already in
place over west TX by evening (00Z), the Gulf moisture source was still closed.
Weak convection persisted through western KS through the night, perhaps aided by
high lapse rates over the high terrain and the nocturnal boundary layer wind
maximum, but remained insubstantial.
